Milestones in Our History
1935: A Humble Beginning
First Atlantic began as a credit union for civilian employees of Fort Monmouth, created to provide affordable financial services during difficult times. Originally named Fort Monmouth Civilian Employees Federal Credit Union, its first office was uniquely located in a repurposed bathroom within a World War II hospital building. The credit union’s first president, Alexander Boross, helped lay the foundation for the member-focused institution it is today.
In its early days, the credit union provided just two products: savings and loans. The maximum loan amount was $150, or $300 with a co-signer. From its founding until 1953, the average loan issued was just $50, reflecting the modest needs of its members at the time.
1957: Growing Together
On August 13, the credit union expanded to serve all employees of Fort Monmouth, becoming Fort Monmouth Federal Credit Union and solidifying its role as a financial cornerstone for the local workforce.
1986: A New Name, A Broader Mission
To reflect its expanding membership, the credit union was renamed First Atlantic Federal Credit Union, opening its doors to employees of select local businesses.
2002: Becoming a Community Credit Union
With a switch to a community charter, First Atlantic began serving anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in Monmouth and Ocean Counties, broadening its reach and impact.
2024: Expanding Horizons
First Atlantic expanded its charter again to include Middlesex County, continuing our mission to bring exceptional financial services to even more members of our community.
